You must have heard the word “Species” many times but do you know what if you actually mean?
The scientist has categorized living beings according to the same type of features, traits and behaviour that they show. let’s take an example. If you visit a library, how do you find your favourite book? It is usually in the children’s section. There are sections for groups and teens too. All these sections are further divided into other categories such as fiction, biographies, science, mystery etc. The librarian has neatly categorized the book according to their types.
In the same way, scientists have categorized living beings. So, a group of living beings that have the same type of features and characteristics is called species. Sometimes, we can see these features while some may not be visible to us as they are inside the body. Scientists often decide whether two groups of animals or plants are the same species by figuring out whether or not they can mate with each other. If we try and get a rose to make seeds with cauliflower it won’t work as they are separate species. But if you try and get a rose to make seeds with another rose, it will work as they belong to the same species.
