What made Nelson Mandela one of the greatest fighters ?
Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa at a time when the white Africans ruled the country. Non-white people were not allowed to use libraries, toilets, beaches and parks. Black people could not go with the white people to school or play sports with them. This practice of segregation (separation) was called apartheid.
Nelson Mandela opposed apartheid. He spent 27 years in the prison fighting for racial equality (equality for people of all color of skin).
He was release from the prison in 1990 due to pressure form prominent international leaders. He became the president of South Africa in 1994 and served till 1999.
Thanks to him, today apartheid is no longer practiced in South Africa. Everyone in South Africa has an equal opportunity at work and at home to live the life they want to live.
